ARTIST COMPETITIONS

DUE DATE: Online entry forms must be completed at submitted by 5pm on Wednesday 30th September. Details of when and where to drop artworks prior to exhibition will be emailed closer to the date so please ensure you monitor email address supplied at registration.

WINNER ANNOUNCEMENT: Winners will be announced at the official presentation evening- Venue and times will be emailed to entrants closer to the date.

Conditions of Entry
General Conditions
– Entries are open until Wednesday 30th September.
– The item entered MUST be made / photographed / painted by the person entering the competition.
– The item cannot have been entered in, or won, any other similar competition including previous Eden Whale Festival competitions.
– A maximum of two items may be entered per category per person.
– For age categories, age is set at date of entry being lodged.
– Items entered in the competition MUST be available to be exhibited in the exhibition space from 1st October to 19th October. Space may be limited. In the unlikely event that we run out of exhibition space we will do our best to rotate the display.
– Entrants are responsible for delivery and pick up of the entered items to the exhibition venue for judging and exhibiting.
– The organisers of the competition and exhibition, and organisers of the Eden Whale Festival take no responsibility or liability for any damage caused to entered items during the setting up and exhibition period.
– Judging will be by a panel and judges’ decisions are final, no correspondence will be entered into.
– The results of the competition will be announced through local and social media. All entrants grant permission to the organisers and sponsors to publish and/or broadcast the names and photographs of the finalists, the winners and their entries through print and electronic media.
– Judges and their immediate families are not eligible to enter.

Artists Who Wood Additional Conditions

PLUGGED
– This category celebrates woodworking that primarily utilises powered machinery and modern woodworking techniques
UNPLUGGED 
– This category recognises traditional woodworking skills where the majority of shaping, joinery, carving, and finishing has been completed using hand tools
COMPOSITE
– This category recognises artworks where wood remains the dominant material but is combined with other materials to create a finished artistic piece
– Wood must comprise at least 50% of the completed artwork
– Categories are Plugged (Open – aged 18 and over), Plugged (Youth – aged under 18)
                              Unplugged (pieces made using unpowered hand tools) and
                              Composite (entries must indicate what inclusions have been added).
– The competition has no theme, any piece can be entered if it is made primarily from wood.

Through the Lens Additional Conditions
– Categories are Open (aged 18 and over), Young Artists (High School aged children) and Emerging Artists (Primary School aged children). Amateur photographers only please.
– Photographs must be original and may be captured using a camera, smartphone, drone, or other photographic device
– Basic adjustments such as cropping, exposure correction, colour balance, contrast, and sharpening are permitted.
– Composite images, added or removed elements, digital manipulation, and AI-generated content are not permitted.
– Images must not have been created using artificial intelligence (AI) image generators
– Photographs must be taken within the last 12 months and in the Bega Valley Shire. Photographs cannot have been entered in, or won, any other similar competition including previous Eden Whale Festivals
– All photographs need to be 20cm X 30cm (A4 size) mounted on black or white cardboard with a 2cm border, labelled with the title of the work on the front and the name and category on the back.
– No watermarks please as this will identify the entrant.
– No glass, frames, boards or poster prints will be accepted.
– The prize money has kindly been supplied by a grant from the Port Authority of NSW.

Paint and Pen Additional Conditions
Mediums – Acrylic, oil, watercolour, ink, pencil, charcoal, pastel, coloured pencil, pen, marker (digital art not eligible)
– Categories are Open (aged 18 and over), Young Artists (High School aged children) and Emerging Artists (Primary School aged children).
– The maximum size is A1, 84cm (H) x 59cm (W).
– All items must be ready to display and hang
– Art should be created on art quality material, suited to the medium used. eg; canvas, art paper
– Both realistic and abstract styles are accepted.
– Artwork must be predominantly created using painting, drawing, or sketching techniques
– Entries must not incorporate significant three-dimensional elements.
– Prints, and copies of another artist’s work are not permitted
– The prize money has kindly been supplied by a grant from the Port Authority of NSW.

Mixed Media Additional Conditions
– Categories are Open (aged 18 and over), Young Artists (High School aged children) and Emerging Artists (Primary School aged children)
– Sculptures, assemblages, installations, and mixed-media artworks may be created from any suitable materials
– Must combine two or more media/materials/techniques
– 2D or 3D works allowed; sculptures/installations allowed
– Works must not predominantly fit another single category (e.g., pure photo or pure wood)
– Must be safe for public display, wall works ready to hang, 3D works stable and self-supporting
– Size limit: fits within 50cm square base or A3 wall-hanging
– Provide brief description of materials/techniques used
– The prize money has kindly been supplied by a grant from the Port Authority of NSW.

Trashformation Additonal Conditions
– Categories are Open (aged 18 and over), Young Artists (High School aged children) and Emerging Artists (Primary School aged children)
– Entries must be created primarily from reused, recycled, repurposed, salvaged, or recovered materials that would otherwise be discarded
– Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks are eligible, including sculptures, wall art, and functional art pieces
– Entries must be suitable for public exhibition and safe for handling and display, no responsibly will be taken for things that fall off
– At least 70% repurposed/recycled/recovered materials
– Safe, non-hazardous materials only; suitable for public exhibition
– Size limit: fits within 50cm square base or A3 wall-hanging
– Provide brief description of recycled materials and how used
– The prize money has kindly been supplied by a grant from the Port Authority of NSW.

NOTE: Eden Tyrepower have old tyres you are welcome to collect if you would like to use them for this category.
